to Bannerdale Crags and Bannerdale |
| Weather on the
Fells can change rapidly ... up-to-date weather on 0870 0550575 |
| (Distance 7.8 miles) |
| There are a couple of lay-bys on the A66 close to The
White Horse pub. |
|
Join the path from the A66 going, up the west side of the bungalow, onto
the slopes of Scales Fell. Continue up diagonally, then up left on
reaching the edge above Mousthwaite Comb.

Follow the path up hill, steep at times hugging the left edge above
Mousthwaite Comb, to arrive at the level area above the Comb. Go around
left below Scales Fell into the valley with the River Glendermackin
below White Horse Bent.

Cross over the outflow from Scales Tarn as the path turns up to the
Tarn. Here, the path is a little indistinct but drops a little then
moves left around the rocky bump to the east of Sharp Edge.

The path soon reaches another small gully, going up a little then out
and right to continue up to the col to the east of Foule Crag.

Go right and follow the vague path up to the top of Bannerdale Crags. Go
left and follow the path along the top to below Bowscale Fell.

|
Follow the path down into Bannerdale, which is on the
slopes of The Tongue, joining a wide track near the bottom.

The track continues around in the direction of Mungrisdale, leaving
Bannerdale. The track eventually reaches the path going west alongside
the River Glendermackin.

Clare and I took a short cut down through the bracket to reach the path
early. The path now winds west following the course of the river.

When the small footbridge is reached below White Horse Bent,
cross the bridge then up the path to arrive above Mousewaite Comb.
Go down the path, left to right, into the bottom of Mousthwaite Comb and
onto the narrow lane. Follow the lane right soon to arrive at The White
Horse pub at Scales. The car park is a short distance further in the
direction of Keswick.
