| Seatoller
to Green Gable via Base Brown, then back over Brandreth and Honister
Mine track |
| Weather on the
Fells can change rapidly ... up-to-date weather on 0870 0550575 |
| (Distance 7.5 miles) |
| There is a reasonable size National Trust
car park on entering Seatoller village from Borrowdale. |
Head down the road from Seatoller towards Keswick, then
right onto the road leading to Seathwaite Farm. Continue down the road
until the bridge over the Derwent River, then join the path going off
right alongside the river.

Derwent, with Base Brown ahead) |

Follow the path to where it meets the path coming from Seathwaite Farm.
Join this path, going right and up to Gillercomb alongside Sour Milk
Gill. The path is well defined and easy to follow.

Once at the top, continue on for a short while passing some high rocks
to the left of the path. Just after the rocks, go off left and head up
the steep Fell side to the rock face below Base Brown. (The less
demanding and easier to follow route continues through Gillercomb and up
to the col between Base Brown and Green Gable.)

The path for this section is not visible on the ground. At the rock
face, go left on a now visible path, contouring below the rocks (looks
like a sheep path!).

Once the route as moved to above Grains Gill area, the
path veers right up the left side of the rocks, to end up above the rock
face. From here, go slightly left continuing up the grassy ground to the
summit of Base Brown.

Head south from Base Brown, the path being
indistinct at times, to meet the path coming up from Gillercomb to the
right. Continue up the wide easy-to-follow path, turning left where it
meets the Brandreth path, to reach the summit of Green Gable.

Rejoin the same path just used to get to the summit, then follow it back
down to the Tarns between Green Gable and Brandreth. Continue up from
the Tarns to Brandreth Summit.
Route finding may be difficult, in poor visibility, from the Tarns
over Brandreth down to this path.

From Brandreth, head down west in the direction of Haystacks, eventually
meeting the path going south/north from below Windy Gap to Honister Mine
tram track. (There is a new wire fence that needs to be crossed soon
after leaving Brandreth.)

Once on the path, go right and follow the path to the Honister Mine
track, then right down the track to Honister Slate Mine shop area at
Honister Hause. Go down the road in the direction of Seatoller, passing
in front of Honister YHA. Soon after, follow a track off left cutting
off a section of the road, rejoining the road further down.

After a short distance, go off left again onto a wide track, following
it down to above Seatoller. Close to Seatoller and the road, take the
steep path off right down through the bracken, to join the road above
Seatoller. Go left down the road and soon arrive back at the car park.
