There is a couple of small car parks off
right from the Borrowdale Road, just before the narrow bend of the
village. One is NT, the other Village Hall parking - £2 per day
on our last visit .
(Distance 10.5 miles) |
Return to the Borrowdale road from the car park, turn
left then straight right over Stonethwaite Beck. Join the path off to
the right following it above the beck. After a couple of bends, pass
through a gate and go right heading down past Stonethwaite. Continue on
this path, avoiding paths off left or right, soon being level with Eagle
Crag to the right.

The path now gently climbs up the valley to arrive
below Lining Crags. Follow the steep and rocky path up the left side of
Lining Crags, to reach the top of Lining Crags.

Continue up the boggy path, becoming obscure at times,
to reach the path coming down from High White Stones. (Route
finding from Lining Crag over Greenup Edge can be difficult in poor
visibility)

At the path down from High White Stones, go left
heading north on the path to Ullscarf, the path being ‘loosely’
marked with old steel fence posts. A couple of tarns are passed before
arriving at Ullscarf summit. Continue north from the summit, then right
on the path following the wire fence to the left, as it gentle drops
towards Standing Crags. The fence continues onto the rocky top of
Standing Crag, so bear right before the top to follow the path around
and down the east side of Standing Crag.

(A fence runs north from Standing Crag over High Tove
and beyond.) Pass through the gate soon after the small Tarn under the
fence, and follow the footpath above the northern shore of Blea Tarn.
Just past the northern end of Blea Tarn, bear right on the path up the
left of Shivery Knot.

From the top, continue north as views down to
Watendlath opens up, to meet the path coming up from the valley on its
way to High Tove.

top of Watendlath) |

Go left and follow the steep path down to Watendlath.
(NT café sells a yummy flapjack!)

Go right around the buildings and over the stone
bridge, crossing the outflow from Watendlath Tarn. Leave the shore of
the Tarn and take the cobbled path going up with the pine trees to the
left.

Cross over the top and descent back into Borrowdale.
Miss the first path off to the right, (I think signed to Bowder Stone)
and take th next one off right near the bottom.

path from Watendlath back to Rosthwaite) |

The path winds down left to exit onto the lane near the
bridge over Stonethwaite Beck. Cross the bridge and return to the car
park ......... or bus stop.
