Great Gable Service, ascending from Seathwaite Farm
|
|
Weather on the
Fells can change rapidly ... up-to-date weather on 017687 75757 |
|
There is plenty of parking along the narrow road leading to the farm
....... but please keep the road, gates and turning-circle clear.
|
|
Pass into the farm, and opposite the shop go through
the gate onto the path through a barn. Cross over the River
Derwent and follow the path up hill.

The path now leads up into Gillercomb, following the
flow of the Gill.

The path continues into the valley with Base Brown
rising to the left, eventually rising up to a col between Base Brown and
Green Gable.

Turn right at the col and continue up to meet the path
from Brandreth. Join this path, going left to the top of Green
Gable. From Green Gable, drop down to Windy Gap and follow the
path directly opposite up the side of Great Gable.

After a short distance, the path goes right up a steep
rocky section before reaching a large cairn. Go left and head for
Great Gable summit. (The is rocky with no discernable path so
caution and good navigation is required in poor visibility ..... like it
was today!)

Leave the top and return to Windy Gap follow the same
route used to the top. At Windy Gap, turn right and follow the loose
path down to Styhead Tarn. The path becomes a 'constructed path' for
the latter stages.

emergency. I believe someone had a problem on the way down from
Great Gable as many of the Keswick Rescue team were on the way up from
Seathwaite)

Continue down the steep path to Stockley Bridge.
