Easedale Tarn from Grasmere
|
|
Weather on the
Fells can change rapidly ... up-to-date weather on 0870 0550575 |
|
There are a couple of car parks in Grassmere. From 30 September to
Easter, there is some roadside parking close to (but not on) Easedale
Road with no restrictions on time. The same parking is available from
Easter to September but restricted times in force. |
|
From Grassmere village road, northern part, go down Easedale
Road crossing over Goody Bridge to the next bend. Avoid the lane
off to the right.

|
Where the road goes right, go left on the footbridge
over Easedale Beck and join the footpath on the track.

Continue on the track as Sour Milk Gill comes into
view.

The track eventually becomes a path as it winds its way round to the
base of Sour Milk Gill.

|

|
The path goes up the left side of the waterfall. There are
pleasant views back down towards Easedale from the top of the waterfall.

The path levels out now as it heads inland towards
Easedale Tarn. Soon Easedale Tarn is reached with views of the higher
surrounding Fells. A path follows the perimeter of the Tarn, or
alternatively, the outflow can be cross at the eastern end of the Tarn
to join the Tarn path.

An arrow and the name Grassmere is painted on a rather large rock
indicating the direction to go.

Turn right and continue on the path as it veers left
away from the Gill. The path soon crosses a boggy area, with some
stepping stones providing a dry route. As the path drops down towards
Far Easedale, it veers left into Far Easedale before going right to meet
a footbridge over the Far Easedale Gill at Stythwaite Steps.

Cross the bridge, turning right and continuing on the wide stony track
as it leaves Far Easedale.

Once past some old farm buildings, the path
enters the wooded grounds of Lancrigg Hotel. Follow the path through the
woods, eventually passing in front of the hotel, then join Easedale Road
on leaving the hotel grounds.

Follow the road, which soon reaches the bridge over the Easedale Beck
crossed at the start of the walk. From here, retrace the route from the
start back to Grasmere.
