Brothers Water to Dove Crag via High Hartsop Dodd,
Returning via Deepdale |
|
Weather on the
Fells can change rapidly ... up-to-date weather on 0870 0550575 |

There is a small parking area either side of the river
at Cow Bridge, on the right side of a bend when heading towards the
Kirkstone Pass from Glenridding, just before the left turning off to
Hartsop village. |
|
From the car park, pass through the gate alongside the
river, then follow the track down to Brothers Water.

Continue after Brothers Water to Hartsop Hall, then
go left through a gate into a field just past Hartsop Hall. (signposted
before the gate to Kirkstone Pass and Scandale Pass) Go right alongside
the wall, then left across the field heading for the bridge crossing
Dovedale Beck.

Cross the bridge and head for the stone building
across the next field at the foot of High Hartsop Dodd. Pass through a
gate and commence the steep ascent up the path to the top of High
Hartsop Dodd. A stile is crossed not long after starting up the path. It
becomes steeper as the path nears the top.

At the top, follow the path along the ridge to Little Hart Crags, keeping on the path skirting to the right of the crags.

A path is joined here that comes up from Scandale Pass. Go right
and continue on the path alongside an old fence. The path and fence
eventually bears left before ascending up the eastern section of the
Fairfield Horseshoe.

Join the Fairfield Horseshoe, going right, and head up
to Dove Crag then drop down between Dove Crag and Hart Crag.

Turn right and head along the rocky path on the way
down into Deepdale. The path drops down to a level area below Dove Crag
and Hart Crag, then veers right to above Deepdale. The rocky crags of
Hart Crag are to the right, giving access via a little scramble to
Priest’s Hole cave. (A guy was on his way up for a visit while we were
passing.)

Continue down the steep constructed path into Deepdale,
bearing left at the bottom, to skirt around the crags on the left.
The path now follows Dovedale Beck for a short while before traversing
the left side of the Fell above Deepdale.

Deepdale - his blue jacket can just be seen in the centre of the rocks)

Follow the path along the Fell side, passing
through a gate, then dropping slowly down to join the path running
through Deepdale.

Turn left and follow the path back to Hartsop Hall which was passed at the start of the walk. The route is now retraced
alongside Brothers Water back to the car park.
