29/30 April - Khare Base Camp

I think the Italians and Australians arrived back at Khare Base Camp on 30th April. They had spent 3 terrible nights at High Camp in snow and high winds, no facilities, then had to return to Khare as they did not have sufficient time for their summit attempt. Very disappointing indeed for them.

We were still snow-bound at Khare, although 30th April was free of snow, but high winds on the mountain tops made it unsafe to venture to High Camp. The time was spent either in my tent, the mess tent ....... or watching the Khare Base Camp Winter Olympics!

Yes, when the snow stopped on the 30th, a variety of ingenious methods were used to propel ourselves along the snow slope in the camp. The Sherpas made some rather good skis out of bamboo canes. A dinner plate was used by Katja, and Daryn and I found one of the folding chairs made a good toboggan. Fun times while we waited for a ‘weather window’.
