East Meon to Butser Hill, then a circuit on a section of the South Downs Way

Distance 10 milesiles

From the East Meon car park (GR 677222) proceed to the main road of the village. 

Follow the left side of the river Meon until just after the pub. Turn left down a narrow gap between the houses to join a footpath. The footpath continues right through an allotment area to join Frogmore Lane. Turn left and follow the road for approximately 2 km.

Take the track on the left as the road sweeps right, avoiding footpaths prior to the bend. Follow the track until reaching a large clearing at a path ‘crossroads’.

 Take the right turning which continues along a track ending at a road. Turn left for 1km to Leythe House Farm, then turn right to join a track (Limekiln Lane) leading up to Butser Hill.

This track continues steadily upwards, eventually turning right and leading up to the road feeding the Butser Hill car parks. This road forms part of the South Downs Way and the Meon Valley Cycle Way.  (Public Toilets are available left and up the road for about 200m.)

Turn right and follow the road on the South Downs Way. At the first left junction, take the track off to the right following the South Downs Way sign. Continue through open fields which provide good views north to East Meon and east along the South Downs Way.  After passing through a wooded area, the South Downs Way rejoins a road which leads to Clanfield.

The South Downs Way continues on the road signposted to Warnford, passing through what used to be HMS Mercury, the Royal Navy Communications School ..... now a very exclusive housing development. (The right side of the road still retains a fenced area of MOD buildings.)

At the end of the fenced area, the South Downs Way continues right along the fence leading to open country. Butser Hill can be seen to the right in the distance. The South Downs Way continues down to Comb Cross House, then crosses a road that leads back to East Meon. (the route can be shortened here by following the road back to the village.)

 Follow the South Downs Way Bridlepath until just before the wooded area. Here the South Downs Way continues left to Old Winchester Hill, with a footpath right back to East Meon. Continue straight on, following the track through the woods, to arrive at the West Meon/East Meon road near Drayton Cottage.

 Turn left then, after about 200m, join a narrow footpath, on the right, passing Drayton Farm. The path continues through fields to join the road at Chalk Dell Cottages.  Turn right, proceed down hill crossing the main road, then after 100m arrive back at the car park.
