A Circular Walk over Firle Beacon, East Sussex

Distance 12 Miles

The turning for the car park is off right from the A27, just after Beddingham and signposted to Firle. Where the road bend left to the West Firle village centre, take the road right and follow it up to the parking area.

From the car park, go west along the South Downs Way, pass the aerials, and on to reach the cattle-grid at the next fence. Just before the cattle grid, turn sharp left and cross the same field going south, to the gate in the bottom corner.

Continue south down the track on the left side of the field, then go left at the bottom and up Fore Hill. Continues south on the wide track/path south of Fore Hill until the track goes down left.

Here, follow the footpath through the field over the hill, then on leaving the field cross a footpath and continue down (still southerly) the fence-enclosed field.

The path soon becomes a track then a narrow country lane passing, through Poverty Bottom, and on to Norton. Keep right on the road and follow it down to Bishopstone. Walk through the village, going right up hill, and where the road continues right, go left onto the track alongside a row of cottages. (There is a fingerpost alongside the first house.)

Follow the track, and where it goes sharp right, take the narrow footpath off to left. The path now passes a couple of farm buildings, then heads north on the right side of a field and eventually being adjacent to a concrete track outside the field.

The eventually moves onto the concrete track which is alongside a golf course. Where the tracks starts to bear right, go straight on leaving the track, along through a gate onto a footpath.

After a short distance, an open area is arrived at. Take the footpath back sharp right down a wide grass track, but soon after go off left onto a narrow path dropping down right-to-left through a wooded area. Once the path levels out alongside the fields, go off left on the next footpath. The path initially goes right, then left up between two fields to the top of a hill.

Go right and follow the path alongside a fence, with a valley down on the left. When it meets the next path coming from the right, go off left diagonally right down the hill. Halfway down, take the footpath off left, going diagonally down to the far corner to meet a stile.

Cross the stile, then go up right following the hedge until past the house. Cross the next stile passing through the hedge, then left along the track, (past another house with great views over Alfriston) and around to soon join the South Downs Way.
