West Marden south then
up through East Marden and over Telegraph Hi;; |
|
The walk starts from outside The
Victoria pub in West Marden. There is limited road-side parking close to
the pub on the road from Rowland's Castle. A bus service runs between
Chichester and South Harting/Petersfield. |
|
There is a narrow lane, going up hill, off from the main
South Harting/Chichester road, opposite the road joining from Rowland's Castle. Join the footpath on the right corner of the lane that goes
up hill, going up alongside a garden and leading into a large open field.

Head up the brow into the open field, then across
keeping just left of the telegraph pole in the centre. Pass through
the next field, through a small wood, and across another small field to
exit onto a narrow lane down from Locksash Farm.

Go down the lane right, then left onto a track following
the sign for Keeper's Cottage. Go left at the end of the track,
passing two house, over a stile and down the track cutting through
Grevitts Copse and Haslett Copse. Avoid a track going off left/right
on the way down. Bear around right at the bottom, then continue
around to the left, following the track on the right side of a field
surrounded by woods.

Soon after leaving the field at the eastern end of
Grevitts Copse, go right up hill and continue on the track to soon reach
the lane at Up Marden. Go right, then soon after take the next track
off to the left. Follow this track, avoiding all access off right
and left, until it reaches the northern end of Inholmes Wood.

Go left here, continue along the right side of the field
outside the wood, then entering the wood and dropping down to the
Walderton/East Marden road. Join the path across the road, going
across a field and over a stile. Keep right in the next field, cross
a stile to the right, then left alongside the hedge. Exit into the
farm yard at East Marden soon after passing under power lines.

Go out to the concrete track, left down to the road,
then right to the thatched Well in the middle of the road. At the
Well, go left up the lane, following it for a short distance until where
the road bends right. Here, continue straight on, following a path
to the right of the fence but on the left side of the field.

At the end of the field, follow the path right through a
narrow strip of bushes, (small old fingerpost shows the way) then across
the next small field heading for the centre of the narrow strip of trees
at the opposite side. Cross the next field to the stile, then
diagonally left to right uphill, to reach another stile at some
trees. Cross over the stile, across a narrow strip, then over
another stile to join a lane.

Go right to the T junction, then onto the footpath
opposite. Follow the path along the right side of the field, going
left on reaching the corner, then around to the right over Fernbeds
Down. (Avoid other footpaths leaving the field.)

The path eventually meets a 'V' junction path, with a
path going off sharp left (fingerpost) and the path currently walking on,
which continues. Join the path going sharp left.

Follow this path along the left side of the fields to
meet the lane above Compton at Bevis's Thumb Long Barrow. Cross over the
lane and continue on the track up to Telegraph Hill.

|
Follow the track, passing a house on the left,
continuing along the top and under power lines to a pine wood.
Continue outside the wood, and where the track bears around to the left
down to Locksash Farm, go right onto the footpath. Follow the footpath down (avoiding the path off right),
soon going sharp left, and down to the lane above West Marden. Go
right down the lane to meet the main road at West Marden, and the end of
the walk.
